Community Works (CW) is a registered adult Pre-Apprenticeship Program run by UMass Amherst and funded through the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (DOT). We have a history of recruiting, training, and placing workers in the Greater Springfield area for jobs in the construction trades and transportation industries.
Our graduates have training in construction mathematics, hoisting prep, line and grade, highway safety, and a number of hands-on projects. In addition, each graduate possesses certifications in:
- OSHA-10 HR Construction Industry
- Highway Flagger
- CPR/First Aid/AED
- Line and Grade
In order to give our graduates on the job training and/or experience in industry, we are collaborating with qualified companies who are able to offer paid one- to two-month internships to CW graduates. Companies that provide such an internship will be reimbursed by our program for 50% or more of that expense.
To be eligible to receiving matching funding for a Community Works internship, your company must:
- Be part of the construction and/or transportation/highway sector of industry
- Be able to offer a 4-8 week internship position, for between 20 to 40 hours of work per week
- Meet a 50% match of $15/hour for the duration of the internship (increased matching funds are available for internships with a pathway to employment or for public Departments for Public Works/Highway)
If your company/organization is interested in providing an internship for a Community Works graduate, please contact us at CommunityWorks@umass.edu or by calling us at (413) 545-1472.
